Mr. Battles continues the story started in SICK with even more details about the intriguing characters and plot. This is not your usual "bad guys about to destroy the world using a nasty virus" story. While it's definitely an "edge of the seat" read, the motivation behind the characters is almost as interesting - and, in a horrifying way, somewhat understandable - as the actual thrilling action. The way that the plot continues to unfold is terribly realistic. He makes the premise chillingly plausible.
The Project is run in an orderly, scientific way by a group of people who approach the near-destruction of mankind as merely a goal to be accomplished in a professional manner. Rather than falling back on the tired "group of crazed fanatics" concept, he has populated his book with intelligent, rational people who can articulate their perfectly logical reasons to wipe out mankind. The fact that we can, at some level, understand their motivations simply underscores the excellent writing. We can see the other side's viewpoint even as we're rooting for our heroes to stop them.
